Police have two suspects in custody after a hit-and-run left a pedestrian dead in the East Texas town of Gun Barrel City on Wednesday.
Police received an early morning 911 call on July 27 about a hit-and-run crash on South Gun Barrel Lane near Stillwater Street. Upon arrival at the scene, they found a deceased male juvenile.
Mabank police officers also responded to the scene to aid in the investigation. The Gun Barrel City police force is only 19 strong, with two investigators, according to the department’s website.
The suspects’ vehicle reportedly fled the scene south on South Gun Barrel Lane before turning west onto Harmon Road, according to police. Officers apprehended the vehicle on Harmon Road and took two suspects, Casey Dylan Jeffrey, 30, and Brooke Leann South, 30, into custody on July 27.
Police believe Jeffrey was driving the vehicle under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision. He was charged with intoxication manslaughter, a second-degree felony, and on Wednesday was awaiting arraignment and a bond hearing.
