A PAC behind a negative text message campaign against David Cook, a candidate for Speaker of the Texas House, appears to be fraudulent.
“Liberal David Cook wants to be Speaker of the Texas House. But Cook: Voted to IMPEACH AG Ken Paxton” the text message from the PAC called Texans for Conservative Leadership (TLC) reads.
“Voted AGAINST ending tax incentives for companies that fund out-of-state abortions & gender modification surgeries on children,” the text message reads found within a Facebook post shared by State Rep.-elect David Lowe.
“The race for Speaker just got incredibly nasty with ‘someone’ sending out texts pretending to be an organization they’re not affiliated with. The URL in the text was registered on November 13th,” Lowe posted on Facebook.
According to Luke Macias, the text messages allegedly came from a Dade Phelan group.
Macias posted the top two contributors for the group behind the text campaign: Texans for Lawsuit Reform PAC and Richard Weekley.
“Looks like folks affiliated with Speaker @DadePhelan are running a little game, attacking #TxLege Rep. @DavidCookTexas by stealing the name of a legitimate organization and sending false text messages,” Michael Quinn Sullivan posted on X.
Shelby Grie, the treasurer of the Texans for Conservative Leadership PAC, posted on X that her PAC did not send the text messages and that the organization masquerading itself as TCL is fraudulent.
As previously reported by The Dallas Express, the Republican Party of Texas State Executive Committee voted 55-4 to pass a resolution censuring Phelan early this year because he allegedly demonstrated a “lack of fidelity to Republican principles and priorities.”
