A Texas police officer was reportedly shot in the face during a car chase involving a carjacking suspect armed with two automatic guns in the Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land metropolitan area.

On Friday, July 21, a car was stolen during an aggravated robbery, according to Chief Troy Finner of the Houston Police Department. Missouri City Police Department (MCPD) officers spotted the vehicle at a gas station the next day in the 15500 block of Winter Briar Drive around 2 a.m. and tailed it.

According to OAN, MCPD officers were forced to call in backup from the Houston Police Department as the suspect refused to pull over and led law enforcement on a brief chase.

Finner said the driver exited the vehicle in front of a home and tried to flee on foot. The suspect pulled out his gun and fired at officers as they approached him.

One of the suspect’s shots struck officer Crystal Sepulveda, 29, in the face. Sepulveda, a three-year veteran of the department, was rushed to Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center for treatment.

Law enforcement later found the suspect in the backyard of a home, where he engaged officers in a shootout. The suspect was struck multiple times and pronounced dead at a local hospital. The suspect’s identity has not been released by law enforcement. Authorities said the suspect, who was 25–30 years old, had two automatic handguns when officers shot him.

Meanwhile, authorities said Sepulveda is “in stable condition” and surrounded by loved ones. She is expected to make a full recovery, according to the Houston Police Department.

She is a strong officer,” said Lance Bothell, the assistant chief of police at the Missouri City Police Department. “She will make it through this.”

Other police departments and law enforcement authorities in Texas have sent messages of support to the wounded officer and department.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to Officer Crystal Sepulveda, who was shot in the face and foot by an armed carjacking suspect early this morning,” Mark Herman, Harris County Constable Precinct 4, wrote on Twitter. “She is in good condition and will survive her injuries. Prayers for a fast and full recovery.”

The Midland Police Department also sent out a message of support to the injured officer via its Facebook page, saying its “thoughts and prayers go out to Officer Crystal Sepulveda.”
