A Spring, Texas, man will spend the next 45 years in jail after being found guilty of murdering his neighbor, Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg announced.

Hector Arturo Campos, 48, was convicted and sentenced last week for shooting and killing his neighbor, 53-year-old Ana Weed, in her front yard on January 24, 2017.

“Hector Campos is a violent and vengeful man who killed his neighbor simply because they did not get along,” Ogg said. “Ana Weed, a loving wife, mother, and grandmother, is dead, and her family is devastated because an angry man with a gun could not control himself.”

Members of the Weed family told jurors that they had an ongoing feud with Campos that started when he tried to cancel a family trip to Mexico. Since Campos had changed his mind, Weed drove his then-wife and baby to the airport.

Weed’s family testified that her actions angered Campos, who ultimately filed for divorce. Their testimony continued that months later, Campos was cleaning a truck in his driveway and confronted Weed about the location of his estranged wife and child, which led to an argument.

During the argument, Weed’s small dog approached and barked at Campos, who tried to kick the animal. Weed, who was holding a roll of clear packing tape, tried to retrieve the dog. Campos then produced a handgun and shot her one time, according to testimony.

In his defense, Campos said that Weed had pushed him, and claimed that he believed she was going to choke him with the packing tape, so he shot her. Jurors rejected his self-defense argument and convicted him of murder.

At Thursday’s sentencing hearing, they sentenced him to 45 years in prison.

“You took away the life of an incredible and valuable person,” Weed’s sister, Carmen Guillen, said during her victim impact statement. “We will cherish her memory, and she will never be forgotten. She lives on through her son and grandchildren.”
