Tragedy struck on Independence Day in New Braunfels when a Texas man drowned in the Guadalupe River.

Around 5:35 p.m., the New Braunfels Police Department and New Braunfels Fire Department responded to the 1400 block of Gruene Road, along the Guadalupe, to an incident of a possible drowning.

When first responders arrived on the scene, the man had already been pulled from the river. They were not able to determine how long he had been underwater.

Paramedics began life-saving measures and rushed the man to Christus Santa Rosa Hospital in New Braunfels, but the man was later pronounced dead.

Officers identified the victim as 27-year-old Pablo Daniel Calzada Rodriguez of Austin.

Preliminary investigation indicated that the drowning was accidental, but Justice of the Peace Jennifer Saunders ordered an autopsy, and the investigation is ongoing.
