An 18-year-old student died after being stabbed during a fight at a Texas high school on Tuesday.

Jose Luis Ramirez, Jr. was stabbed in a campus bathroom at Belton High School, allegedly by high school senior Caysen Tyler Allison, on May 3. According to authorities, Allison fled the school after the stabbing and was apprehended around 10:09 a.m.

Ramirez was transported to Baylor Scott and White in Temple, where he died from his injuries.

The suspect has been charged with murder and remains in the Bell County Jail on a $1 million bond.

“The assistance we received from Belton ISD and the Temple Police Department was instrumental to achieving this outcome,” said Deputy Chief Larry Berg. “We appreciate them very much.”

Hundreds of people attended a prayer session and balloon release for the Ramirez family on Tuesday night.

According to Itty Henry, another Belton High student, Ramirez could always make people smile.

“He always had the right jokes, and everybody loved him,” said Henry. “I don’t think I can name a person that didn’t like him because he always put other people before himself.”

“I’ll miss him every day,” said Amanda Rios, Ramirez’s mother, to KCENTV. “Our family is so close, we all love each other, we do everything together. He’s going to be so missed.”

On Tuesday, the mayor of Belton, Wayne Carpenter, offered his condolences to the victim, his family, and the community.

A Tuesday Mass was held by the Christ the King Catholic Church to offer prayer to those affected by the incident.

Ramirez’s family has created a GoFundMe account. Cynthia Grubb, the fundraiser’s organizer, said any funds would go to his family to help with funeral and burial costs.

Belton ISD canceled classes on Wednesday and Thursday “out of consideration for this very difficult time.” The high school announced that counseling teams would be on-site to give students and staff support.
