Gas prices across Texas have risen sharply over the past year, with the state recording the fifth-highest percentage increase in the country from April 2025 to April 2026.

A new SmartAsset study found that the average price of regular gasoline in Texas is now 36.1% higher than a year ago, while diesel prices have climbed 60.9%.

As of early April 2026, the statewide average for regular gas stood at $3.77 per gallon, according to AAA data.

In the Dallas-Fort Worth area, prices run slightly higher at some pumps. A gallon of regular gasoline costs about $3.89 in parts of Dallas, while diesel averages around $5.19 per gallon in the region. Fort Worth and Arlington show averages closer to the statewide figures.

The SmartAsset report, titled “Gas Prices Hit Records in 2026: State by State Breakdown,” compared AAA averages from April 1, 2025, and April 1, 2026. Texas ranked 35th-highest for the cost of regular gas nationally, but ranked higher for diesel prices.

The national average for regular gasoline reached $4.06 per gallon in early April, marking the first time it exceeded $4 since August 2022. California reported the highest regular gas price at $5.89 per gallon, while Oklahoma had the lowest at $3.27.

As of April 6, 2026, the AAA Texas average for regular unleaded stands at $3.824 per gallon, with diesel at $5.212 per gallon. The increases come amid broader market pressures on oil supply and spring travel demand.

Drivers in North Texas continue to feel the impact at the pump. However, current prices remain below the city’s historical peaks recorded in June 2022, when regular gas averaged $4.837, and diesel reached $5.476.
