Texas families can now borrow fishing rods, reels, and tackle from their local public library, just like checking out a book, thanks to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s (TPWD) Tackle Loaner Program.
The program, which continues to expand across Texas in 2026, partners with public libraries and other community sites to provide free loaner fishing equipment to encourage outdoor family time and introduce more Texans to fishing.
How the Program Works
Participating libraries, such as those in Little Elm, and partner sites, such as the City of Anna, allow patrons to check out basic fishing kits that typically include a rod and reel and a tackle box with bobbers, weights, and hooks.
Equipment is available on a first-come, first-served basis, usually for a few weeks at a time, with some locations requiring a library card in good standing.
“You can borrow free fishing equipment as easily as you borrow books at a library,” according to the official TPWD program description. Sites handle check-out and return, while TPWD supports participating locations with equipment and maintenance.
Participating Locations
Dozens of sites across Texas currently participate, including libraries in Beaumont, Dallas (Mountain Creek Public Library), Edna, Farmers Branch, Hurst, Little Elm, Nacogdoches, Pottsboro, San Antonio, and The Colony.
The program is especially popular with families. In Little Elm, for example, patrons can check out up to two rods per person or per family, plus tackle boxes. Equipment must be returned to the library’s front counter.
Families can also fish for free year-round at more than 70 Texas state parks (park entry fees still apply).
Program Goals
TPWD created the Tackle Loaner Program to lower the cost of entry into fishing and promote family outdoor recreation. Officials say it helps build connections to nature and supports conservation efforts funded by fishing license sales. The program continues to add new libraries and community partners.
Anglers ages 17 and older generally need a fishing license, but the loaner kits make it easier to try the sport. TPWD also offers beginner clinics, youth events, and educational resources throughout the year.
