Officials with the Texas Department of Public Safety unveiled the agency’s largest aircraft hangar in the state near the Mexican border.

Texas DPS officials met with legislators and local leaders on January 26 in Edinburg to unveil a new aircraft hangar to boost the agency’s Aircraft Operations Division.

“From border security and disaster response to search and rescue and assisting law enforcement agencies across Texas, our aircraft operations play a critical role in keeping Texans safe,” said Texas DPS Lt. Chris Olivarez on X. “Texas continues to lead the way in public safety.”

Along the Mexico border, Texas DPS pilots often work alongside Customs and Border Protection pilots to intercept illegal crossings and criminal activity, as The Dallas Express reported.

In October 2025, Texas DPS announced it would be the first state agency in the nation to outfit its helicopters with drone-detection technology. Just days before, the agency unveiled a new Cessna plane at McKinney Airport for operations across North Texas.

The Dallas Express reached out to Texas DPS for comment, but did not hear back in time for publication.
