Several members of Texas’ congressional delegation are slamming state House Republicans for striking a deal with Democrats to help State Rep. Dustin Burrows win the Speaker’s race.
“Attention Republican Texas House Representatives: With your victory comes increased responsibility to follow the November 5th mandate issued by Texas voters. There is no justification for TX House Republicans to strike a deal with Democrats who want a Speaker that will appoint Democrats as committee chairs,” Congressman Keith Self wrote on X.
The letter was signed by Reps. Wesley Hunt, Michael Cloud and Tony Gonzalez, as well as Rep.-elect Brandon Gill.
“There is no justification for any Republican Texas House member to work with Democrats to elect a Speaker who will appoint Democrats to chair committee positions in exchange for political support,” the letter says.
“We urge you to stand with the Texas House Republican Majority and support the Texas House Republican Caucus nominee for Speaker,” the letter said.
“President Trump just delivered Republicans the biggest mandate we’ve had in decades, one that goes along all the way down the ballot. It’s astounding to me that a group of Republicans in the Texas House would betray their voters – and President Trump – by teaming up with Democrats to support a Speaker not backed by a majority of the Conference. Republicans didn’t get a mandate to share power with Democrats or give them committee chairs. Are y’all really that tone deaf? Read the room,” Gill wrote on X.
Rep. David Cook, Mansfield Republican, won the support of the state House GOP caucus in the race for Speaker. Burrows, a Lubbock Republican, is working with Democrats to secure enough cross-party votes to claim the speakership.
The Dallas Express reached out to Burrows office but did not receive a comment.
