Longtime chef John Meyer decided to scrap plans for a beach vacation and instead spend his time off feeding people impacted by flooding in Central Texas.
The longtime chef and owner of The Best Little Food House in Texas had originally planned to be relaxing in Rockport following a catering event he had scheduled to work in Austin. However, rainy weather over the Fourth of July weekend ultimately forced the event to be canceled, leaving Meyer with a truck full of food.
Meyer was then struck with the idea of taking his food truck to the flood-ravaged community of Comfort in Kendall County, where he could offer meals to those impacted by the natural disaster.
“I said to my wife… let’s pray about it… and the Lord put in my heart to come over here and start feeding people with it,” Meyer said, per KENS5.
Since arriving in Comfort, Meyer and a group of volunteers have served at least 800 meals, with no signs of slowing down.
Meyer is no ordinary chef. His resume includes times spent cooking for NFL players and catering Super Bowls as the Dallas Cowboys’ chef.
“I’ve done everything from Super Bowls to Olympics… but nothing fills my heart like giving people free food… Just using my God-given talent to bring the community together,” he said.
“This is a perfect example of when the body of Christ comes together… brothers and sisters in Christ coming together to do God’s work,” said Meyer.
Another volunteer helping on the ground, Marcus Breaux with Soldiers of Christ Ministries, says flooded communities continue to require urgent help.
“To the first responders… we’re praying for you… We lift you up, and thank you for rushing in when people are rushing out,” said Breaux.
Meyer says so long as there is food to be provided and people in need, his truck will stay put.
“It’s not about us… It’s about the community,” he said.
As reported in The Dallas Express, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott announced on Monday that more impacted communities will receive federal disaster aid. In total, 10 counties now qualify for FEMA’s Public Assistance program, including Kendall.
