Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham announced that the state has approved $45 million in federal mitigation funds for infrastructure projects in Brazoria County and in the cities of Buffalo and Clute.

The funding will support critical improvements to roads, drainage systems, sewers, and water detention facilities through the Texas General Land Office’s Regional Mitigation Program.

The investments come as Texas communities face increasing threats from natural disasters. The projects aim to reduce long-term risks and strengthen local infrastructure before the next major storm strikes.

“The GLO is delivering results that make Texas stronger and safer,” said Buckingham. “These funds will protect families, support communities, and prepare our state for the challenges ahead.”

The commissioner emphasized collaboration with local officials to maximize impact.

“By working hand in hand with local leaders, we are ensuring that federal resources are turned into real improvements that Texans can count on,” Buckingham added.

The funds originate from $1.17 billion in Community Development Block Grant Mitigation money allocated by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Texas distributed the money through regional councils of government, which developed distribution methods with extensive public input.

Federal guidelines require at least half the funds to benefit low-to-moderate income residents. The program focuses on activities that increase disaster resilience and reduce future risks to life and property.

Project details are available on the GLO’s Regional Mitigation Program webpage. The office continues accepting applications from communities seeking infrastructure improvements to withstand future disasters.
