A high school teacher in Texas lost his job and could face jail time after he allegedly showed students pornography during class unintentionally.

Kevin Welchel, a former teacher at Klein Collins High School in Houston, was fired after allegedly watching pornography on his laptop when it appeared on a projector during class.

According to the district’s spokesperson, Justin Elbert, Welchel was “immediately removed” and is no longer working with the school district. “The district does not tolerate such completely unacceptable conduct,” said Elbert.

Welchel was charged with displaying harmful material to a minor, a misdemeanor punishable by up to $4,000 and a year in jail.

The incident has caused a division amongst parents.

One woman told KPRC 2, “It’s not shocking because people do watch [pornography], and there are sick people out there in the world. They better get right with God.”

But a couple who lives next door to Welchel was stunned by the news.

“Our relations with Kevin and his wife have always been very positive,” they said to KPRC. “They are very active and supportive parents to their two children. I think this allegation needs to be checked out thoroughly.”
