After a man accused of aggravated assault refused to come out of an apartment last Sunday, Austin police managed to get him into custody.
The standoff and eventual arrest took place in the Manor House Apartments complex located on Manor Road in northeastern Austin, Texas. Also nearby was the Manor campus of Austin Achieve Public Schools. No children or bystanders are known to have been harmed as part of the man’s standoff with the police.
After police received a call at 8:17 p.m. on July 17, they responded to the scene and found that a man had barricaded himself into an apartment. This prompted police to call in a SWAT unit.
A few hours later, at about 12:30 a.m. on July 18, the police had managed to remove the man from the apartment and arrest him.
In Texas, aggravated assault is defined as any act where one person “intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly” causes or threatens to cause “serious bodily injury to another, including the person’s spouse.” Cases of aggravated assault may also involve the use of a deadly weapon but not necessarily.
Police did not specify whether the man had been armed, but given the presence of a SWAT unit and the fact that an aggravated assault had been reported to the police, it is likely that officers considered the possibility of this being the case.
The circumstances that led to the 911 call remain unknown, but detectives from the Austin Police Department say they are investigating the case. Given the presence of detectives from the household violence unit at the scene, it appears that police believe what happened to be related to some domestic dispute.
Neither the suspect’s name nor the names of anyone he may have harmed or threatened to harm have yet been released to the public. This is a developing case, and more details will become available as police release information from their investigation.
