Texas state troopers will patrol shopping districts in five major cities during the holiday season to prevent theft and robbery, officials announced on Monday.
Operation Safe Holidays deploys Department of Public Safety officers to high-traffic areas in Austin, San Antonio, Houston, Dallas, and Fort Worth through the winter holiday shopping season.
DPS troopers will work alongside city officers in downtown shopping corridors, hospitality zones, entertainment districts, and seasonal event venues.
“Texas hosts numerous holiday attractions and events that rely on strong pedestrian activity,” Texas Department of Public Safety Colonel Freeman F. Martin said in a news release. “The Department of Public Safety is committed to working alongside our local partners to ensure these areas are well-patrolled and safe for Texans, their families, and visitors alike.”
The deployment targets areas with historically high holiday foot traffic. Patrol schedules will adjust based on crowd patterns and public safety needs.
State officials describe the program as a collaborative effort between state and local agencies. The initiative aims to maintain a visible law enforcement presence as shopping and dining activity increases. The agency plans to modify coverage based on real-time conditions and event schedules.
