An 18-year-old son allegedly stabbed his mother and his father in what police described as “a quick moment of rage” on Tuesday night, according to the Primera Police Department.

Dallas Scott Gilbert was arrested for allegedly killing his mother, 47-year-old Angela Watt Gilbert. He also confessed to attacking his 55-year-old father, Gary Scott Gilbert.

Dallas allegedly stabbed his mother six to eight times and his father several times in the midsection and ribcage, according to police.

Gary Gilbert was able to call 911 while he pinned down his son after being stabbed, police said.

Officers responded to the 911 call in the 21800 block of Stuart Place Road just after 11:30 p.m. There, they found Angela Gilbert lying in a pool of blood in the living room of the home.

Officers then found her husband holding down their son.

Angela Gilbert died on the way to the hospital. Gary Gilbert was admitted to the hospital and remained in intensive care as of Wednesday.

Primera Police Chief Manuel Trevino, who spoke during a press conference on Wednesday, said Angela Gilbert was likely taken by surprise.

“I can say one thing: The female did fight. She did have several defensive wounds on her hands, which means she didn’t go down without a fight,” Trevino said. “But again, this was her son attacking her. She probably had no idea what was coming.”

Trevino told reporters that the suspect confessed.

Dallas Gilbert told police he was not under the influence of illegal substances or alcohol during the attacks and explained that the incident happened in an “unexplainable [rage] of anger.”

“It’s an unfortunate matter, especially being that the suspect is the son of the victims, and the age of the suspect is what really throws me a lot,” Trevino said.

A police affidavit obtained by KTSM9 News revealed that Dallas Gilbert was outside speaking with his mother “when all of a sudden, he started remembering that earlier in the day his dad was complaining about Dallas not [being] in shape to even throw a football,” according to the affidavit.

According to a court document, Dallas Gilbert was arrested in October 2022 for a minor drug offense involving THC but had nothing else on his record.

Trevino spoke to The Dallas Express about the incident and said that when he and his investigators questioned the suspect, he hoped Dallas Gilbert would give him a motive or a reason.

“He just said it was a moment of uncontrollable rage,” Trevino said, adding that the suspect did not show remorse.

“When you take the life of the person that gave you life, that’s sad,” Trevino expressed.

According to records, Gilbert is being held in the Cameron County Jail on charges of murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. His bond is $1.5 million.

Trevino told The Dallas Express that this marked the first homicide in a long time in Primera, a city of fewer than 5,500 residents near the U.S.-Mexico border, about eight hours south of Dallas.

“For us, we are a very small community, and I’ve been the chief here for the past 11 years. It’s our first homicide here in the community,” Trevino told The Dallas Express. “We are a very peaceful community, but unfortunately situations like this, sometimes you could say no matter how many officers you have on patrol, you cannot control other people’s anger or rage.”

Meanwhile, the City of Dallas has seen 90 murders this year, nearly a 22% increase from last year at this time, according to the Dallas Police crime briefing.

What everyone wants to know is if the boy was prescribed psychiatric drugs.
