At least two people were killed and five others injured during a “drive-by” mass shooting late on Saturday in San Antonio, Texas, according to police.
Around 10:13 p.m. on June 18, officers were dispatched to the 2500 block of Patron Drive after receiving a call about a drive-by shooting. Upon police arrival, they discovered a number of victims suffering from several gunshot wounds, two of whom were pronounced dead at the scene.
“A family was barbecuing out in front of the house, and someone drove by and unloaded on them, firing off about twenty or thirty rounds,” said Chief McManus of the San Antonio Police Department. “We have seven shot and two dead right now: two females, and the remaining five are men in their 20s to early 40s.” The chief added, “Back in May, there was a deadly conduct incident at this house, a drive-by, but other than that, we don’t have any incidents at this house.”
Emergency Medical Services pronounced two of the males deceased on the scene. The other five people were transported to local hospitals to care for their wounds. Their conditions were not disclosed.
The police are still gathering information on the drive-by shooting from the scene. Chief McManus suspects the act was random but still targeted. He stated six children were in the house at the time of the shooting, but none were injured.
Chief McManus stated that police do not have a description of the suspects, but they have “a couple [of] theories” about the cause of the shooting. Still, McManus cautioned that the investigation was in its early stages.
“Unfortunately, this continues to happen,” said the San Antonio PD chief. “It doesn’t seem to matter what we say or how much we warn people to put guns away. It just continues to happen. There seems to be no concern for consequences or for peoples’ lives.”
