Congressman Roger Williams has expressed his support for former President Trump and the victims of Saturday’s failed assassination attempt at a campaign rally in Butler County, Pennsylvania.
“Our prayers continue to be with President Trump and the victims of last night’s terrible assassination attempt. We are grateful for God’s protection and the quick actions by law enforcement to prevent further harm,” Williams (R-TX) said in a statement to The Dallas Express.
Trump miraculously survived the attempt on his life when he tilted his head at the last moment to speak to the crowd, thus changing his positioning just enough that the bullet only clipped his ear. However, others were less fortunate.
As previously reported by The Dallas Express, Corey Comperatore, 50, was killed while shielding his wife and daughter with his own body.
Two other rally attendees — 74-year-old James Copenhaver and 57-year-old David Dutch — also sustained injuries during the shooting. Both are reportedly in stable condition.
“President Trump and the American people deserve a thorough and transparent investigation into how this was allowed to happen. I am thankful to Speaker [Mike] Johnson and [House Oversight Committee] Chairman [James] Comer for leading this investigation in the House of Representatives,” Williams told The Dallas Express.
Calls for someone to get to the bottom of the fatal incident have been reverberating across the country.
“Congress will do a full investigation of the tragedy yesterday to determine where there were lapses in security and anything else that the American people need to know and deserve to know,” Johnson (R-LA) said on Sunday in an appearance on the TODAY show. “But in the meantime, we’ve got to turn the rhetoric down. We’ve got to turn the temperature down in this country.”
Comer (R-KY) asked Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle to testify at a congressional hearing on July 22.
Likewise, House Homeland Security Chair Mark Green (R-TN) demanded answers from Mayorkas in a Sunday letter. “We need answers now,” he posted along with the letter.
