Republican State Rep. Dustin Burrows’ victory over the Republican-caucus-backed Rep. David Cook in the Texas House Speaker race has sparked social media reactions.

Burrows (R—Lubbock) took to X to state his focus coming into his newly elected role:

“The duty bestowed upon me today as Speaker of the Texas House is one of immense responsibility and honor, and I thank each of my colleagues for their trust and vote of confidence. As Speaker, I stand ready to support every member as we collectively navigate the most pressing issues facing Texans today — issues ranging from improving education to providing additional property tax relief, bolstering water resources, fighting for safer communities, and everything in between. While the majority will guide our course, the House’s strength lies in its diversity, and my leadership will be dedicated to ensuring every voice is heard and every district represented this session,” reads the full message Burrows posted on X.

Yet, not everyone is satisfied with the results of the Speaker election.

“Dustin Burrows got elected with majority Democrat support. David Cook got the support of the majority or the Republican Caucus,” State Rep. J.M. Lozano (R-Kingsville) wrote on X.

“Another Democrat backed speaker installed in Republican majority Texas House!” Texas GOP Chairman Abraham George wrote on X.

“Still think voting works? Texas is overwhelmingly Republican, but Democrats choose the Speaker of the House. The problem is idiot Republicans voting for liberals in the primaries,” podcaster Jeff Younger wrote on X.

Others were supportive of Burrows’ win.

“Congratulations, @Burrows4TX — our next Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives! Now let’s get to work,” the Texas Young Republican Federation wrote on X.

Attorney General Ken Paxton said the work to reform the Texas House continues.

“I’ve been fighting to reform the Texas House for over two decades and will not stop. We have made incredible progress in the past two years and must remain steadfast and hold out representatives responsible for their actions this session,” Paxton said in a statement posted on X.
