Attorney General Ken Paxton said Wednesday that the Texas House is planning to issue articles of impeachment against him for a second time.
The House indicted Paxton on 20 articles of impeachment last year that focused on alleged bribery and misuse of office, as previously reported by The Dallas Express. The Senate then acquitted Paxton on 16 articles and dismissed the other four.
However, Paxton claimed in an interview with Newsmax this week that the House is planning to repeat its attempt to oust him.
“Next week’s House General Investigating Committee meeting is yet another desperate attempt by the Republican establishment to impeach me,” the attorney general said. “Their bitter obsession with taking me down knows no bounds, and they will stop at nothing to remove me from office. Just like Biden’s relentless attacks on President Trump, establishment Republicans in Texas have joined forces with Democrats to launch a full-force lawfare assault against me.”
Paxton told Newsmax’s Robb Schmitt that Texas lawmakers “are looking to coordinate with the Biden administration to try to take me out with a federal case or do another impeachment in the House.”
The attorney general specifically criticized House Republicans who continue to oppose him.
“These lame-duck Republicans, who lost their primaries thanks to my support, are now conspiring with Democrats to remove me from office,” he continued. “I have delivered conservative results in Texas and have been the last line of defense against voter fraud. But mark my words—these weak-kneed, pro-open-border Republicans will work with the Democrats to replace me with an AG who will turn a blind eye to voter fraud.”
Paxton said the pushback against him is tied to the presidential election.
“Texas, this is a warning—they want to rig this election against Trump,” he said. “By removing me from office, they aim to appoint an AG who will refuse to prosecute voter fraud. Democrats and their Republican enablers pose the biggest threat to American and Texas democracy.”
“The Austin elite cannot go unchecked,” he continued. “Republicans, conservatives, and patriots across the state and country need to come together and fight back. We have defeated the establishment class in Austin before, and we will do it again. Together, we will fight voter fraud and deliver Trump a victory in November.”
Rep. Andrew Murr (R-Junction), head of the House General Investigating Committee, denied Paxton’s claims.
“No one should assume that Ken Paxton is ever telling the truth,” Murr told The Dallas Express. “There is absolutely no truth to Mr. Paxton’s farfetched fantasy that the House General Investigating Committee is meeting to talk about him.”
“Our committee’s agenda was never related to the Attorney General; the House General Investigating Committee will be convening on a completely unrelated matter,” he continued. “Consistent with the committee’s longstanding policy to not comment on matters under its jurisdiction, the subject of our hearing remains confidential.”
