A shooting in Midland on Friday left at least one victim dead and 11 others injured. Additionally, the suspect has been confirmed dead.
The City of Midland posted the following update on Facebook at 11:39 am: “The active shooter incident has been resolved, and the suspect is confirmed deceased. The scene remains active and has not been cleared. Road closures in the area are expected to remain in place for the foreseeable future as the investigation continues.”
Midland Mayor Lori Blong confirmed during a news conference that one person was killed and 11 people were injured in the incident, which began shortly after 8 am.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families, and our officers,” Blong said.
Authorities said the shooting was contained to the 4600 block of West Wall Street, although Blong said the incident began in southeast Midland before moving across the southern part of the city.
The Midland Police Department said officers responded Friday morning to reports of an active shooter in the area and encountered gunfire coming from a building.
“Midland Police responded to an active shooter incident Friday morning in the 4600 block of West Wall Street,” the department said in a statement, per CW39. “Officers heard gunfire coming from the building and worked quickly to secure and clear the area. Armored units were deployed, and partner agencies assisted in the response. Efforts to bring the standoff with the shooter to a safe resolution are ongoing.”
Ector County Sheriff Mike Griffis said the suspect was barricaded inside a building near Tall City Vet Clinic, All American Collision, and the Victorian Inn.
Blong said authorities had established a secure perimeter around the area and urged residents to stay away and shelter in place. Roads leading into the area from Highway 80 were closed, and drivers were asked to seek alternate routes.
Multiple law enforcement agencies from across the Permian Basin responded to assist. The FBI also dispatched agents from its Midland satellite office to the scene.
Midland Memorial Hospital reported receiving nine victims from the shooting. Hospital officials said four patients were undergoing surgery while five others were listed as stable. The hospital’s main campus was placed on lockdown for nearly two hours, and the emergency department remained under restricted access.
Hospital officials directed family members seeking information about loved ones to report to the hospital’s main entrance and said updates would not be provided by phone.
Officials have not released details about the suspect or the victims. Witness reports of additional shootings elsewhere in the city had not been confirmed.
