On May 11, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Texas announced that the U.S. Postal Inspection Service arrested a San Antonio resident on criminal charges, alleging his involvement in robbing letter carriers and stealing their postal keys.

According to court documents, 24-year-old Tony Evans, also known as “Tony Tre Von Evans” and “Tony Trevon Evans,” allegedly confronted three United States Postal Service (USPS) letter carriers on separate occasions and demanded that they hand over their postal keys. The robberies occurred in San Antonio in July and August of 2021 and Austin in April of 2022.

According to a press release, Evans is said to have brandished a firearm on two occasions.

Evans is charged in a criminal complaint with the robbery of U.S. mail, money, or property. If he is convicted, a federal district court judge will impose a sentence under the United States Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.

The announcement was made during Evans’ initial appearance before U.S. Magistrate Judge Richard B. Farrer, U.S. Attorney Ashley C. Hoff of the Western District of Texas, and U.S. Postal Service Inspector in Charge Scott Fix of the Houston Division.

The U.S. Postal Inspection Service is investigating the case, and Assistant U.S. Attorney William Calve is prosecuting it.

According to Fox News, the USPS suspended services in a Santa Monica, California, neighborhood in April due to repeated attacks on mail carriers since January.

A resident near 14th Street and Arizona Avenue intersection was accused of swinging a broomstick at a mail carrier delivering mail in the early evening hours on January 19. According to reports, the carrier was unharmed in the attack.

The USPS recently notified residents that delivery service to all addresses in the 1300 block of 14th Street had been suspended.

According to USPS spokeswoman Natashi Garvins, three separate incidents involving three different letter carriers on 14th street of the 1300 block of Santa Monica over the last several months have resulted in service temporarily being suspended to those residents.

“This is an unusual but necessary step to protect our employees,” she said.

The Dallas Express reached out to the USPS for comment on the safety of Dallas mail carriers and is awaiting a response.
