Texas has been ranked as the eighth-best state economy in the entire country.
According to a new study released by WalletHub, 28 different categories helped rank each state based on its total economy, with the Lone Star State ranking eighth best in the country with an overall score of 57.51.
Massachusetts ranked as the country’s best economy, receiving an overall score of 70.84.
Texas ranked fourth in the country for economic activity, 11th in the country for economic health, and just 24th for innovation potential.
This ranking is supported heavily by a high number of exports, as the Lone Star State is tied with Louisiana and Kentucky for the most exports of any state.
WalletHub Analyst Chip Lupo explained that a “strong state economy doesn’t guarantee success for the state’s residents,” but there are other factors to consider as well.
“Factors like a low unemployment rate and high average income help residents purchase property, pay down debt and save for the future,” he added in the study.
“The best state economies also encourage growth by being friendly to new businesses and investing in new technology that will help the state deal with future challenges and become more efficient.”
Although ranking as the eighth-best state economy is impressive, it casts a different picture than Gov. Greg Abbott’s claim that “Texas is the leading economy in the United States.”
Abbott made this claim at the end of 2024, following an impressive year when the governor wrote in a news release that Texas was the “eighth largest economy in the world.”
While the Lone Star State may not rank quite as highly as the rest of the world, it has still received impressive recognition throughout 2025.
Site Selection magazine announced at the beginning of May that Texas was the state best suited for attracting new businesses, awarding the state the Prosperity Cup for its achievement, as previously reported by The Dallas Express.
Additionally, a May 21 report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics found that Texas added 37,700 new “nonfarm payroll” jobs in April and 215,500 new jobs since last year to lead the country in job creation, according to DX.
