Tarrant County’s Meals On Wheels said it is in urgent need of volunteers to deliver meals this summer.

The current heat tearing through North Texas has caused many volunteers to take time off this summer months, a time when there is always a need for their services, according to CBS 11 News.

“We have an increased need for volunteers during the summer months,” the organization wrote on Twitter. “This year’s heat has left many of our clients without a volunteer to deliver their meals.”

Volunteering for Meals On Wheels takes just one hour, one day a week, according to the organization. Volunteers would be needed to deliver meals to homebound residents one day a week, Monday through Friday. The volunteers can choose to go out in groups or individually.

The organization also needs volunteers for other Meals On Wheels initiatives. On-Call Volunteers to help with office mailings, staff booths for community volunteer and health fairs, and contribute to other special projects are also needed.

The Friend to Friend program, where volunteers develop relationships with homebound elderly or disabled clients in their neighborhood, and Meals On Wheels’ special events, such as fundraisers, Casino Night, the Legends Luncheon, and the Golf Classic, are also in need of additional help.

Volunteers are the driving force of Meals On Wheels. The organization’s president and CEO, Carla Jutson, described volunteers as the backbone of the business.

“Not only do they deliver nutritious meals and friendly smiles, but they also provide daily safety checks, ensuring clients are safe in this heat,” Jutson said. “Their service is more important now than ever!”
