U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers rescued nine illegal aliens who had been sealed inside wooden crates at the Falfurrias Checkpoint in what the agency described as an apparent human smuggling attempt.

A Border Patrol K9 alerted officers to the crates, which contained little to no ventilation, according to the agency’s social media post on Thursday. A juvenile was among those found inside.

“With little to no ventilation and extreme summer heat, these individuals were placed in life-threatening conditions,” the agency said on social media. “Smuggling organizations show complete disregard for human life, endangering men, women, and children for profit. Their actions are criminal and inhumane, exploiting vulnerable people and putting lives at risk.”

The condition of the people removed from the crates was not disclosed.

It was not clear whether anyone had been arrested or whether charges were filed in connection with the incident.

“This rescue is a stark reminder: human smuggling is not just a crime, it is a direct threat to the safety and wellbeing of those targeted by these organizations,” the agency said.
