(Texas Scorecard) – A new documentary sheds light on the critical issue of unreliable energy subsidies in Texas, exposing the hidden dangers and geopolitical risks associated with the state’s growing reliance on wind and solar power.

“Red Power,” the latest documentary from Texas Scorecard, delves into the economic inefficiencies and national security threats posed by the increasing dependence on Chinese-manufactured renewable energy sources, such as wind turbines and solar panels. The film offers a stark warning about the future of energy in Texas.

This growing reliance undermines U.S. national security and empowers China, a nation that has openly declared its intent to challenge American global dominance. Through interviews with experts and Texas lawmakers, the documentary explores how Chinese investments in U.S. wind farms—particularly those near military installations—pose a direct threat to national security, including the potential for espionage and infrastructure sabotage.

Despite being promoted as “green” alternatives to fossil fuels, these energy sources are far less efficient and require significantly more land. “Red Power” also highlights the hidden environmental costs incurred when producing and disposing of solar panels and wind turbines, including hazardous waste and extensive land use.

Central to the issue is the massive subsidies, many at the local level, that sustain these unreliable energy sources.

“Red Power” features interviews with lawmakers, including U.S. Rep. Chip Roy, State Sens. Bob Hall and Lois Kolkhorst, and Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham. The documentary also includes insights from energy policy experts such as Alex Epstein, Bill Peacock, and Luke Dunn.

“China has about 1,100 coal-fired plants. We have about 250. They’re building about one and a half to two a week; we’re building none,” said Roy. “They’re no dummies. They’ve got to build their economy and grow it. So they are producing reliable power, heavily using coal to do it. They’re also building some gas and nuclear plants. But it’s reliable power that’s driving their production.”
