The homeless services nonprofit Haven for Hope in San Antonio is seeking volunteers to help out at its campus.

“Want to give back and make a difference? Haven for Hope is looking for volunteers! Volunteer as an individual or get your whole organization involved,” the nonprofit posted on its Facebook page earlier in the week.

The group referred interested parties to the volunteer page on its website, which outlines the various ways people wanting to help out can contribute to the organization’s operations. All volunteers, however, must complete an online background check. The background check costs $6.50.

The nonprofit also facilitates group volunteer projects.

“Haven for Hope welcomes groups of any size to serve on our campus. Projects can include washing sleeping mats, sorting donations, landscaping, painting, playing Bingo, and more. We are also open to hearing any group volunteer ideas you may have,” the website reads.

As previously reported by The Dallas Express, Haven for Hope is also hiring security personnel to help coordinate efforts with local law enforcement in the event of criminal activity or disturbances on its campus.

Haven for Hope uses a “one-stop-shop” approach to fighting homelessness, offering a number of homeless services like counseling, drug and alcohol treatment, and job training on the same campus where it maintains transitional housing.

The model has been credited with a 77% reduction in unsheltered homelessness in downtown San Antonio and has previously polled favorably among Dallas residents, the majority of whom disapprove of the amount of homelessness, vagrancy, and panhandling that can be seen in their neighborhoods and across the city.

Some local stakeholders are working to try out the model in Dallas. However, whether City officials will support the effort remains to be seen.
