A former Texas Christian University (TCU) superstar athlete died in a car accident in Dallas on Monday, May 30, around 2:30 a.m.

NFL player Jeff Gladney, 25, was driving a white Mercedes SUV that struck a Lexus from behind in the westbound service lane of Woodall Rodgers Freeway at Allen Street, according to the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office.

When the Mercedes collided with a support beam, it toppled over and caught fire.

Gladney’s passenger has been identified as 26-year-old Andrea Mercedes Palacios. The individuals in the Lexus were not severely injured.

An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the crash, but investigators suspect speed was a factor.

The Arizona Cardinals recently signed Gladney to a two-year contract, and he was set to play this upcoming season. He previously played for the Minnesota Vikings but was cut from the team for allegedly assaulting a woman in Dallas last year. In March, Gladney was found not guilty of the felony charge.

“We are devastated to learn of Jeff Gladney’s passing,” said the Cardinals in a statement on Monday. “Our hearts go out to his family, friends and all who are mourning this tremendous loss.”

Gladney was in Texas this week to assist his mother with closing on a home. He leaves behind a 1-year-old son.

On Monday, a number of Gladney’s football peers expressed their condolences on social media.

“Rest in Peace Jeff,” tweeted Zach Allen, who plays for the Cardinals. “Prayers to you and your family.”

Jalen Reagor, another player, also mourned the loss of his former TCU teammate.

“Lost my Brother, my best friend, my right hand man… ain’t too much more I can take man, damn!” said Reagor. “R.I.P Jeff Gladney, brother watch over me please.”

Sharonda Francois, Gladney’s cousin, said, “He was very loved by us all. He was an all-around good kid, and his contagious smile is what he was known for.”
