Following a massive defeat for Democrats in Texas, Democrat Party Chairman Gilberto Hinojosa has announced his resignation.
“In the days and weeks to come, it is imperative that our Democratic leaders across the country reevaluate what is best for our party and embrace the next generation of leaders to take us through the next four years of Trump and win back seats up and down the ballot,” Hinojosa said, reported The Texas Tribune.
Hinojosa is calling on Democratic leaders “at all levels to join me in lifting up the next generation in order to unite our party.”
As previously reported by The Dallas Express, President-elect Donald Trump made significant gains with Hispanic voters in Texas and across the country during the 2024 election cycle.
According to exit polling by the Washington Post, 55% of Latino voters in Texas supported Trump, marking a 14-point swing from the 41% he received in 2020, as reported by the Houston Chronicle.
In a previous interview with The Texas Newsroom, Hinojosa stated that the party’s poor performance could be the result of how it handled issues.
“You could, for example, you can support transgender rights up and down all the categories where the issue comes up, or you can understand that there’s certain things that we just go too far on, that a big bulk of our population does not support,” Hinojosa said, reported The Texas Tribune.
Democrats’ reaction to Hinojosa’s resignation have been mixed online.
“I thank Chairman Hinojosa for his years of dedication and service to the @texasdemocrats. I appreciate his willingness to step down so that our Party can move forward with a new vision for the future and turning Texas blue,” Democratic state Rep. Ron Reynolds posted on X.
Republican Party Chairman Abraham George released a statement, saying, “Today, my counterpart, Texas Democrat Chairman Gilberto Hinojosa announced he will be stepping down after the abysmal defeat Texas Democrats suffered in the last election. Mr. Hinojosa had a moment of sanity when he acknowledged that Texas voters do not want radical transgender ideology in our state.”
