A massive fire left a South Texas chicken egg farm largely destroyed on Tuesday, with no confirmed cause for the blaze as of yet.
The Brazos County Sheriff’s Office reported that it had received reports of a fire at the Feather Crest Chicken Farm in Kurten at around 5 p.m. on Monday. Several fire departments in the area were sent to respond to the blaze, according to Fox News.
The Bryan Fire Department posted images of the blaze on January 30 showing a massive plume of smoke emanating from the facility and flames covering two of the metal structures.
Fire crews had worked through the evening hours of January 29 and managed to contain the blaze the following day. The farm, owned by MPS Egg Farms, is located in a rural area about 100 miles north of Houston. Due to its remote location, there are no nearby fire hydrants, Fox News reported, meaning firemen were left relying on a water shuttle system to douse the flames. Over 100 firefighters remained at the site Tuesday afternoon to subdue the fire.
Workers were present at the time of the fire, but no human injuries were reported.
“… [O]fficials confirmed two buildings were destroyed and chickens perished, but we still don’t know what started the blaze,” Rusty Surette, a reporter for KBTX-TV, stated on X.
Sam Krouse, CEO of Feather Crest Farms, confirmed to reporters that two chicken houses had caught fire, one of which had contained chickens at the time. All of the birds in that house were lost.
“We are thankful for the swift actions of our entire team and that they are all safe. We also deeply appreciate the first responders who reached the farm quickly and helped to prevent any further damage,” said Krouse, as reported by KHRD 15.
