A fire on Sunday at an apartment complex in Fort Worth left a man and two children hospitalized, and more than 30 other people were left displaced.
Fire crews were sent to an apartment building in the 2300 block of Meadowbrook Gardens Drive after the Fort Worth Fire Department received a fire call at around 6:00 a.m. on July 3.
The caller stated that two children were still in a burning upstairs apartment but gave few other details.
When the firefighters arrived, they discovered thick smoke coming from the two-story apartment building. While some crew members quickly entered the building to locate the trapped children, other first responders drew hose lines to extinguish the fire.
Firefighters located the children on the second floor of the apartment building. One child was found in the breezeway and brought to the waiting medical personnel outside. Crews entered the structure and discovered the second child, also carried to the medical staff.
Two medical helicopters were put on alert by the incident commander for a potential emergency transfer. Additional workers were dispatched to the blaze to assist after a second alarm was issued.
The victims, who are 10 and 12 years old, were flown by helicopter to Parkland Hospital, where their current health status is unclear. Also, a man needed medical attention after rescuing other residents from the unit during the fire.
A total of two adults and six children were at home in the apartment that was on fire, according to officials.
Firefighters managed to keep the fire contained in the kitchen. Still, smoke and water damage affected eight units. The blaze required three-and-a-half hours and 80 personnel to extinguish.
The incident impacted an estimated 32 people.
