The fugitive who allegedly shot and killed five people in Cleveland, Texas, near Houston was caught Tuesday, police said.
Francisco Oropesa, 38, was arrested on May 2 around 6:15 p.m. after four days on the run, according to NBC 5 DFW.
Immigration officials say Oropesa is a Mexican national who has been deported multiple times for unlawfully entering the United States, the last time in July 2016, CNN reported.
The shooting killed Sonia Argentina Guzman, 25; Diana Velazquez Alvarado, 21; Julisa Molina Rivera, 31; Jonathan Casarez, 18; and Daniel Enrique Laso, 9, as previously reported by The Dallas Express.
Oropesa was captured near Conroe, 20 miles from where the shooting took place.
More than 250 people from multiple jurisdictions were involved in the extensive four-day search for the suspect.
Montgomery County Sheriff Rand Henderson said Oropesa was captured without any struggle, according to AP News. He was found hiding underneath a pile of laundry in the closet of a home after police received a tip at around 5:15 p.m., per NBC 5.
“They can rest easy now, because he is behind bars,” San Jacinto County Sheriff Greg Capers said, via NBC 5, referring to the families of the victims. “He will live out his life behind bars for killing those five.”
The five people were allegedly shot in the 100 block of Walters Road in the Trails End area of Cleveland after 11:30 p.m. Friday.
The shooting reportedly started after neighbors asked Oropesa to stop shooting his rifle in the yard because children were trying to sleep. He allegedly told the neighbors that he could do what he wanted on his property.
Capers said police have been called to Oropesa’s residence on more than one occasion because of guns being fired on his property.
Oropesa will be charged with five counts of murder, according to Capers. His bail was set at $5 million.
