Earlier this week, Gov. Greg Abbott announced that more than $7.5 million in Fund for Veterans’ Assistance grants had been allocated to support 22 organizations in the Alamo and Hill Country regions of Texas.
This funding, awarded by the Texas Veterans Commission (TVC), will support various services for more than 7,200 veterans and their families in 35 counties, according to a press release from the governor’s office.
At a press conference earlier this week, Abbott highlighted the state’s commitment to its veteran population.
“Texas is proud to be home to the largest veteran population in the nation, and we will continue to ensure we support our veterans and their families,” said Abbott. “These Fund for Veterans’ Assistance grants will provide the men and women who served in our nation’s military access to crucial services they need to thrive in the Alamo and Hill Country regions.”
TVC Chairwoman Laura Koerner, a Navy veteran, also expressed her enthusiasm for the positive impact that these new funds will have on America’s veterans.
“Military City, USA, is showing why it earned its namesake for both active military and veterans in the Alamo area and Hill Country. I serve all of Texas, but this is my home, and I’m proud to see these funds dedicated to a broad array of services from financial assistance to our new service dog program,” said Koerner.
The funds for the grants mainly come from the Texas Lottery Commission’s games that are specifically allocated to support veterans. Additional funding sources include individual donations made through driver’s licenses, handgun licenses, outdoor recreation licenses for hunting and fishing, and vehicle registration fees, according to the governor’s office.
“Texas will forever honor the sacrifices our veterans and their families made in service to our state and country,” concluded Abbott.
