A shooting in Parker County left a 5-year-old dead and sheriff’s deputies wondering what happened.

The Parker County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division is investigating the shooting in the victim’s home on Woodie Way just after 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Sheriff Russ Authier said.

The 5-year-old victim was playing with a young relative when an adult inside the residence heard a gunshot.

Investigators say the adult, who was watching the children, owns a 9mm handgun kept in a dresser in the master bedroom. The adult added that the magazine had been removed for safety.

The adult told the sheriff’s office that the children were playing in another room when the adult left to attend to a third child in the living room. That is when the adult apparently heard the gunshot and saw the victim’s injuries.

Paramedics arrived on the scene and rushed the child to an area hospital; they attempted life-saving measures during the ride. Hospital personnel later pronounced the 5-year-old dead.

The identities of those involved have not yet been released, and no arrests have been made.

Sheriff Authier said this case is still ongoing. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of this child,” he added.
