The University of Texas welcomes its newest potential weapon to the starting lineup, Casey Thompson. Thompson, who had been with the Longhorns for four years, was finally moved to the starting quarterback position in place of Hudson Card.
Texas Longhorns coach Steve Sarkisian was complaining about Card’s recent performance, stating, “We weren’t great protecting him early on in the game, but I thought he was a little antsy and we missed some opportunities. The game could have easily gone a different direction than it did.”
On Saturday, the Longhorns play Rice, which should be an opportunity for a win and a smooth introductory period for Thompson. Casey Thompson hasn’t held a starting position since 2017, back in high school. The new coaching staff and the need for fresh talent on the field have opened the possibility of Thompson becoming a fixture.
Thompson proved himself to the coaches and the fans on Saturday when he was called in the late third quarter during the Razorbacks 40-21 victory against the Longhorns.
Running back Bijan Robinson had kind words for Thompson, saying “I feel that he came in, stayed calm, understand the situation that he kind of had to bring us out of. He just knew what we had to do to get as much as he can to execute.”
Longhorn’s coaches aren’t expecting miracles from the new quarterback, and want Thompson to focus most on keeping himself collected and utilizing his playmaking skills. Both Thompson and Card will have the opportunity to play in the game against the Rice Owls, and the competition for starting spot is expected to continue.
The team chemistry seems to be excellent with both quarterbacks, with the team having full faith in either matchup. The Longhorns’ current record is 1-1 after the loss against the Razorbacks.
