The University of Texas has another trophy to add to its case. The school’s men’s golf team won the 2022 NCAA Championship on Wednesday afternoon, bringing home the fourth NCAA team title in the program’s history.

The monumental win came against Arizona State at the Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona. The 3-2 victory was a part of the school’s second appearance in the championship round of the sport over the last three years. It was also the Longhorns’ third trip to the championship of the last six opportunities. The Texas Men’s Golf team previously won the title in 1971, 1972, and 2012.

The match was tied at 2-2 when Junior Travis Vick teed off against Cameron Sisk. Vick sent his second shot of the 18th hole to 25 feet past the hole, while Sisk’s second shot landed in the greenside bunker. Sisk then hit a remarkable shot from the bunker to land within two feet of the cup. However, Vick countered by sending his birdie putt to within one foot for the easy tap-in that clinched the championship for his team.

Senior Parker Coody got the Longhorns on the board with a convincing 6 & 5 win against James Leow. Another senior-led effort earned the second point of the match when Pierceson Coody notched a point for Texas with a 2 & 1 victory competing against Preston Summerhays.

The other Texas golfers who teed off on Wednesday were Cole Hammer and Mason Nome, who both lost close matches to their Arizona State opponents.

With this win by the Texas Men’s Golf team, the Longhorns boast 62 national team championships in their storied history, of which 58 are NCAA titles. Wednesday’s victory also marked the fourth national championship during the current academic school year.

In addition to the Men’s Indoor Track and Field team winning the title in March, the Women’s Tennis and Women’s Rowing teams also won national championships in May. With the addition of the Men’s Golf title, the Longhorns won three NCAA championships in just 11 days.

When asked about his trio of senior golfers, head coach John Fields said, “They’re three of the best golfers that have ever played at Texas. With these guys, they are three of the best people on the planet, and I’m going to really miss them, and so is Texas. But they’re going to go out there and do great things.”
