Team USA basketball has officially announced a roster of 12 NBA players for the 2024 Olympics in Paris, set to begin in July.
Each of the 12 NBA players named to the roster was either a 2024 NBA All-Star or a member of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic team that won the country a fourth consecutive gold medal.
This team will seek to continue the dominance displayed by Team USA basketball in past Olympics, as the U.S. has brought home a total of 17 gold medals, including winning seven of eight gold medals since professional athletes were first allowed to participate in 1992.
Members of the 2024 Team USA Basketball Olympic team are as follows:
- LeBron James of the Los Angeles Lakers
- Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors
- Kevin Durant of the Phoenix Suns
- Joel Embiid of the Philadelphia 76ers
- Devin Booker of the Phoenix Suns
- Jayson Tatum of the Boston Celtics
- Anthony Davis of the Los Angeles Lakers
- Tyrese Haliburton of the Indiana Pacers
- Anthony Edwards of the Minnesota Timberwolves
- Jrue Holiday of the Boston Celtics
- Bam Adebayo of the Miami Heat
- Kawhi Leonard of the Los Angeles Clippers
The team will be coached by current Golden State Warriors Head Coach Steve Kerr, who was announced as the successor to San Antonio Spurs Head Coach Greg Popovich after the Tokyo Olympics.
Assistant coaches will include Los Angeles Clippers Head Coach Tyronn Lue, Miami Heat Head Coach Erik Spoelstra, and Gonzaga Head Coach Mark Few.
Members of Team USA were selected by USA Basketball Men’s National Team managing director Grant Hill and later approved by the USA Basketball Board of Directors.
Hill took over for former managing director Jerry Colangelo after the Tokyo Olympics, saying in a statement that he was honored to make the selections and is excited to begin preparing the team for the challenge.
“The United States is home to some of the best basketball players in the world and I appreciate the vast interest in being part of this roster. These decisions weren’t easy, but it was a pleasure to go through the process and reach this outcome,” he said.
“We have the utmost respect for the level of competition we will face this summer. The Olympics represent the pinnacle of [the] sport and the world will be watching the USA as we play in the toughest basketball tournament in history.”
This roster includes five returning players from the 2020 Olympic team, with Durant, Tatum, Booker, Holiday, and Adebayo each receiving an invite to return to the team in 2024.
The most notable player participating in the Olympics for the first time is Stephen Curry, who previously played for Team USA at the Fiba World Cup in 2014.
The two-time NBA MVP and four-time NBA champion had previously intended to play for Team USA in 2016 during the Rio Olympics but had to remove his name from contention due to knee and ankle injuries.
The announcement of the 2024 Team USA basketball roster came exactly 100 days before the Olympic Opening Ceremony is scheduled to take place on July 24, with a tipoff for the first game being scheduled to take place on Saturday, July 27.
