Tinder has reported a significant increase in user activity during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with matches rising nearly 60% across the United States compared to the same period last year.
The dating app also saw a 15% increase in users and a 25% rise in swipe activity nationwide.
The spike is particularly notable in World Cup host cities, where international users showed even stronger engagement. Tinder recorded an average 47% increase in activity among international users in host cities across the U.S., Mexico, and Canada between June 11 and 16, Fast Company reported.
Surge Concentrated in Host Cities
Host cities have seen the strongest gains. Monterrey, Mexico, reported more than an 80% increase in international user activity around certain matches, while Guadalajara saw a 74% rise. In the U.S., cities such as Boston recorded a 47% increase during key games, per GDI.
Domestic users also contributed to the rise, with activity up 22% across the 16 host cities. Tinder’s Passport feature, which allows users to swipe in different locations, has seen higher usage in major markets including New York/New Jersey, Los Angeles, and Miami.
Nature of the Activity
Tinder has not released data on whether users are primarily seeking relationships or casual encounters. The company described the increase as part of a broader “singles mixer” atmosphere created by the influx of international fans.
The spike appears temporary and tied to tourism. Activity levels are measured against the same period in 2025, before the World Cup began. Tinder has not indicated whether the elevated usage will persist after the tournament concludes in July.
Broader Context
The World Cup has drawn large crowds to host cities, creating opportunities for social interaction. Tinder’s internal data shows the event has boosted both international and domestic engagement on the platform. Similar patterns have been observed during major sporting events in the past, though the scale this year appears larger due to the tournament’s size across three countries.
The company has not commented on long-term effects or changes in user behavior beyond the current tournament period. Tinder continues to monitor activity as the World Cup progresses through its group stages and beyond.
