The Dallas Mavericks, Texas Rangers, and Dallas Stars were all in action over the weekend.

Here is what happened on the court, on the field, and behind the scenes.

NBA

Dallas Mavericks (38-44, third in Southwest Division, 11th in Western Conference)

Last Games: Chicago Bulls 115, Mavericks 112; San Antonio Spurs 138, Mavericks 117

The Mavericks dropped their final two games of the season to finish 38-44. With most of its primary players sitting out Friday night, Dallas blew a 15-point lead as Chicago went on a 15-2 run in the fourth quarter to secure a three-point win. On Sunday, San Antonio led the Mavs by 28 after the first quarter, led by as many as 31, and was in complete control throughout the contest.

Noteworthy: Friday’s loss eliminated the Mavericks from playoff contention.

— Dallas sat most of its starters on Friday, which has prompted an investigation by the league. Dallas entered the game still in playoff contention, but Luka Doncic was the only starter who played at all, and he sat for the rest of the game after the first quarter.

— Forward Theo Pinson entered the starting lineup on Sunday against the Spurs and tallied his first triple-double with 23 points, 13 rebounds, and 12 assists.

— Dallas ends the season with the 10th-worst record in the NBA, a season after appearing in the Western Conference Finals.

MLB

Texas Rangers (5-4, tied first in American League West)

Last Games: Chicago Cubs 2, Rangers 0; Cubs 10, Rangers 3; Rangers 8, Cubs 2

The Rangers lost two of three in the weekend series in Chicago but salvaged a win in the series finale. Marcus Stroman held the Rangers to just three hits in a shutout win on Friday, while the Cubs’ offense clicked all day on Saturday. A four-run second inning and a good performance from Jon Gray earned Texas the win on Sunday.

Noteworthy: Sunday’s win kept the Rangers from falling below .500 for the first time this season. Texas is now 4-2 in interleague play.

— Starting pitching performed well over the weekend despite the losses. All three Rangers’ starters lasted at least five innings and gave up no more than two earned runs. On Saturday, Martin Perez lost for the 13th time since the beginning of last season when allowing two or fewer runs in at least five innings.

— The Rangers have announced that pitcher Josh Sborz is starting a rehab assignment with Triple-A Round Rock.

Dallas Stars (44-21-14, second in Central Division, fourth in Western Conference)

Last Game: Stars 2, Vegas Golden Knights 1 (shootout)

The Stars earned a win over first-place Vegas in a shootout on Saturday. Brett Howden scored for Vegas, and Joel Kiviranta scored for Dallas in regulation, but neither team found the back of the net in the third period or overtime — sending the game to a shootout. Dallas’s Roope Hintz scored the only shootout goal as Jake Oettinger turned away the Golden Knights’ final scoring attempt.

Noteworthy: The Stars briefly held first place in the Central Division after Saturday’s win, but Colorado has since reclaimed it.

— Oettinger now has 35 wins on the season, the fourth-most by a goalie in franchise history. Marty Turco and Ed Balfour are the only two with more, and Turco set the record with 41 in the 2005-06 season.

— The win gives the Stars a 3-0 sweep against the Golden Knights this season, with two of the wins coming in shootouts.
