TCU Advances With Win Over ASU

TCU advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament with a 72-70 victory over Arizona State in Denver.

The sixth-seeded Horned Frogs (22-12) will play third-seeded Gonzaga on Sunday.

Gonzaga (29-5) defeated Grand Canyon earlier Friday, 82-70, in the West Region.

Arizona State led TCU by 11 points in the second half before the Horned Frogs came back.

JaKobe Coles’ floater with 1.5 seconds remaining was TCU’s game winner.

Guard Mark Miles Jr. scored 26 points for TCU.

5 p.m. Friday

The TCU men’s basketball team opens the NCAA Tournament against 11-seed Arizona State on Friday night.

The Horned Frogs (21-12) finished tied for fifth place in the Big 12 and were ranked as high as 11th in the country at one point. TCU set program records with six top-25 wins and 14 consecutive weeks as a ranked team and made a run to the semifinals in the Big 12 Tournament despite numerous injuries.

TCU is in the tournament for a second consecutive season for the first time since 1953 and the 10th overall. Many expected the Horned Frogs to be a five-seed, but they enter the Tournament as a six.

Arizona State advanced with a convincing win over Nevada in the First Four on Wednesday.

The all-time series is tied 2-2, and the teams have not met since 2009.

The two will square off at 9:05 p.m. CT Friday in Denver.
