The Dallas Stars remain perfect this season, edging out the San Jose Sharks 3-2 in a thrilling shootout Tuesday night. Wyatt Johnston sealed the victory by converting Dallas’ third consecutive shootout attempt, securing the team’s fourth straight win.
With goaltender Jake Oettinger stopping San Jose’s first shootout shot, Johnston’s goal ended the contest. Jason Robertson and Matt Duchene also scored in the shootout for Dallas (4-0), CBS Texas reported.
Oettinger delivered a strong performance, recording 25 saves during regulation and overtime. On the other side, San Jose’s Mackenzie Blackwood faced heavy pressure, stopping 36 of 38 shots—Dallas’ highest total of the season. Despite Blackwood’s efforts, the Sharks (0-1-2) are still searching for their first win under 36-year-old head coach Ryan Warsofsky, the youngest in the NHL.
The game’s only regulation goals came during an eventful second period. Tyler Toffoli and Ty Dellandrea each put San Jose ahead temporarily, with Dellandrea scoring against his former team following a turnover by Stars captain Jamie Benn. However, Dallas responded quickly with goals from Duchene and Roope Hintz to tie things up and ultimately force overtime.
Johnston, who continues to impress in his second season, not only netted the game-winner but also recorded an assist on Hintz’s goal. The 21-year-old forward has now earned points in all four of Dallas’ games, tallying one goal and three assists so far.
The Stars faced adversity in the third period, successfully killing off three San Jose power plays, including a 96-second stretch with two men down. Dallas’ defense stood tall, extending their streak of resilience after going nearly 148 minutes of ice time this season without conceding a goal. The streak ended when Toffoli intercepted a pass from Robertson and scored unassisted, giving San Jose a brief 1-0 lead in the second period.
Dallas’ power play continues to lag, as the team went 0-for-3 with the man advantage, including a missed opportunity on a double minor early in the game and another during the final 43 seconds of overtime. Despite their power-play struggles, the Stars’ unbeaten streak has them off to one of their best season starts in years.
Next, Dallas hits the road after a three-game home stretch, preparing to face the Washington Capitals on Thursday night.
