The Stars kept a goose egg in the loss column of the NHL standings on Thursday night against Toronto but earned their first overtime loss on the night as they fell to the Maple Leafs 3-2 in the extra period.
Star’s backup goalie Scott Wedgewood made 40 saves in his season debut for Dallas (3-0-1) and helped his teammates stay competitive in the contest.
“I thought Wedgewood was excellent,” Stars coach Peter DeBoer told NHL.com. “We found a way to get a point in a tough building. We knew they’d be really good, and they were. Had we been able to stay out of the box, I liked our chances of winning the game.”
Dallas center Luke Glendening scored his first goal of the season at the 14:45 mark of the first period, giving Dallas an early 1-0 edge. Assists on the goal were awarded to both Radek Faksa (1) and Nils Lundkvist (2) on Glendening’s goal.
Wedgewood allowed his first goal of the season in the second period when Alexander Kerfoot scored on a power play to knot the game at 1-1, where the score remained until the final period of regulation play.
Nicholas Robertson would score his first of two goals of the night two minutes into the third to give the Maple Leafs their first lead in the contest. Toronto earned the OT win when Robertson scored his second goal of the game at 3:46 into overtime.
Dallas got their lone power-play goal of the night at 7:21 when Tyler Seguin’s goal evened the score at 2-2. At first, the goal was disallowed because of illegal contact with the goalie. The Stars raised a challenge on the official call. After review, Mitchell Marner, a forward for the Maple Leafs, was the one to make the first contact with the goalminder, and the goal was upheld. Assists on the goal went to Mason Marchment (3) and Wyatt Johnston (1).
Wedgewood finished the game, stopping 40 of 43 shots and dropping his record to 0-0-1. The Stars’ regular goalie, Jake Oettinger, who has the best goals-against average in the NHL (1.00), had the night off in Toronto. He has allowed as many goals all season (three) as Wedgewood did in the OT loss.
The Dallas road trip heads from Toronto to Montreal (3-2) on Saturday, October 22, starting at 7 p.m. ET as the Stars face the Canadiens. Oettinger (3-0-0, 1.00) will likely be in the net for the Stars and will face probable Montreal goalie Jake Allen (2-1-0, 2.02).      Â
