Last week saw several notable football matches featuring DFW-area teams ranked in the Texas state high school football rankings:

6A:

No.6 Denton Guyer 49, No.14 Allen 7

The matchup of teams that were both ranked in the top 10 in the state did not live up to the hype as Denton Guyer earned a home blowout win over Allen in a nationally televised game on ESPN2.

Guyer’s senior quarterback Jackson Arnold showed why he is rated as a five-star prospect by 247Sports. Arnold, an Oklahoma commit, passed for 334 yards and four touchdowns, adding 84 yards and a touchdown on the ground to lead Guyer (8-0, 5-0 District 5-6A).

Arnold had more touchdown passes than incomplete passes (three), as he went 25-for-28 through the air.

The win was Guyer’s first over Allen (6-2, 4-1) in program history, snapping a six-game losing streak that began in 2014. The loss was Allen’s most lopsided since a 38-0 loss against Southlake Carroll in the 2006 state semifinals.

The win also puts Guyer square in the driver’s seat to win the District 5-6A championship.

Guyer more than doubled Allen’s total offensive production, racking up 525 yards of offense compared to Allen’s 261.

Guyer led 14-0 at halftime and out-scored Allen 21-0 in the third quarter, forced three punts, and limited the five-time state champions to just 30 total yards of offense in the period.

Dampening Allen’s night further was an injury suffered by star junior running back Kayvion Sibley, who was carted off the field near the end of the second quarter after medical personnel placed a large brace on his left leg.

5A Division I:

No.3 Aledo 35, Denton Ryan 21

Denton Ryan looked poised to be the team to finally end Aledo’s record 109-game in-district winning streak dating to 2007.

But their rally fell short as Aledo (7-2, 7-0 District 3-5A Division I) scored the final 14 points of the game in the last 10 minutes of regulation to pull away for the road win and extend their record streak to 110.

Aledo Quarterback Hauss Hejny threw for 149 yards, added 132 more on the ground, and accounted for three touchdowns — including a game-breaking 86-yard touchdown run with 3:52 remaining.

Aledo built a 21-7 halftime lead, but Ryan (4-3, 4-2) pulled even with 10:37 left in regulation.

Ryan first trimmed the deficit to seven to open the third quarter on a 50-yard touchdown pass from Khalon Davis to TCU commit Jordyn Bailey. Davis found Bailey again from 5 yards out with 10:37 left in the fourth to tie the game at 21.

But the comeback ended there as Hejny responded by finding Jalen Pope for a 24-yard touchdown and adding his big run to ice the game.

Friday was the first meeting between Aledo and Ryan since the 2002 and 2003 playoffs, with Ryan having won both of those playoff meetings.

The two traditional football powers were placed into the same district for the first time during this February’s biennial district realignment.

No.5 Frisco Reedy 29, Frisco 7

In a battle of the top two teams in the district, Frisco Reedy was dominant in the win over Frisco at Toyota Stadium.

The win puts Reedy (9-0, 7-0 District 6-5A Division I) on the verge of what would only be the program’s second-ever district title.

Reedy scored on the first play from scrimmage, with Caleb Deal connecting with Texas Tech commit Kaleb Smith on a 70-yard bomb to put Reedy on top 7-0. Reedy would score on their first four possessions to take a 23-0 lead midway through the second quarter.

Senior running back Dennis Moody carried the ball 25 times for a season-high 215 yards and a touchdown for Reedy. Moody now has a district-leading 1,215 rushing yards on the season, along with 15 touchdowns.

Frisco (6-2, 5-1) scored their first and only points when Camren Gibson hit Ismael Taylor for a 19-yard touchdown strike making the score 23-7 with 2:52 to go before halftime.

Reedy’s offense stalled in the second half, as they had just over 120 yards of total offense and managed only two field goals.

Frisco entered the night averaging 237 rushing yards per game but had just 56 on the ground against a stiff Reedy defense.

Reedy will officially wrap up their first district championship since 2018 if they defeat Frisco Heritage on Thursday night at the Ford Center at The Star. Heritage is 5-1 in the district.

5A Division II:

No.1 Argyle 35, Frisco Independence 10

Top-ranked Argyle knocked off an undefeated district opponent for the third straight week in Frisco Independence.

Argyle (8-0, 4-0 District 3-5A Division II) relied on their dominant run game to wear down Independence (7-1, 3-1) in the second half.

Argyle rushed for 273 of their 448 total yards and had two running backs eclipse 100 yards. Landon Farris had 20 carries for 153 yards and two touchdowns, while RJ Bunnell had 19 carries for 127 yards and one score.

Independence’s defense held strong in the first half, trailing only 7-3 at halftime.

But Argyle blew the game open with Farris and Bunnell scoring back-to-back touchdowns to open the third quarter, aided by a fumble recovery in between.

After Independence responded with a touchdown of their own, Argyle found the end zone twice more and came up with two additional takeaways.

Independence suffered several self-inflicted setbacks, including 11 penalties — nine of which came in the first half. They also faced multiple injuries in the second half, including one to their starting quarterback Matteo Quattrin.

Argyle has yet to lose a game since moving up to 5A, as they continue to make their case for not only the best team in the area but a state title contender.
