A Serbian basketball player playing for his country’s national team at the FIBA World Cup in the Phillippines has lost a kidney after suffering an injury late in a game against South Sudan last week.

Borisa Simanic was hit with an elbow as he defended South Sudan’s Nuni Omot with less than two minutes left in the game. Simanic yelled out and dropped to his knees before being taken to the hospital and having emergency surgery. The Serbian Basketball Federation later announced that his recovery had hit a snag, and he would need the organ removed through another procedure.

“Due to postoperative complications on the injured kidney, Boriša Simanić was operated on again on September 3,” a statement on the team’s social media channels from team doctor Dragan Radovanovic read. “Due to changes in the vitality of the kidney tissue, the entire kidney had to be surgically removed. We expect and wish that the postoperative course will go smoothly after this operation.”

According to ESPN and one of Simanic’s teammates, doctors in Manila had trouble finding Simanic’s blood type, which may have contributed to some of the complications and led to some of his Serbian teammates volunteering to donate their blood.

Upon learning of the nature of Simanic’s injuries, Omot released the following statement through the South Sudan Basketball Federation:

“I am deeply saddened by the news of Simanic’s injuries. As a sportsman, I firsthand understand the severity of his situation and I am deeply sorry that this happened. No player should have to go through that. I pray for Simanic’s recovery and speedy return to the court.”

Simanic has played professionally in Europe since 2015 and is a backup for the Serbian National Team. He has been ruled out for the rest of the tournament.

Serbia continued its FIBA World Cup run with an 87-68 win over Lithuania in the quarterfinals on Tuesday, and Simanic was honored by fans and teammates. The team will face Canada in the semifinals on Friday, with the winner taking on the winner of Team USA and Germany in the championship on Sunday.
