The 2024-2025 NFL league year officially kicks off this week with the start of free agency at 3 p.m. CT on Wednesday.
Teams cannot officially sign pending free agents to deals until that time, but they are allowed to begin negotiating with them as the “open negotiating period” — or “legal tampering period” as it has become known — begins.
During the 52-hour period, teams and players can “agree to terms” on contracts, but players cannot officially sign with new teams. They can, however, return to their current teams. Many will also seek trades, which can only become official once the new league year begins.
The Dallas Cowboys had been tied to several notable free agents, including running backs Derrick Henry and Saquon Barkley, but a report from the NFL Network suggests they will look elsewhere due to the salary cap.
The Cowboys were entering the offseason with no cap space but restructured guard Zack Martin’s contact last week to give them about $8.8 million entering free agency.

Here are some notable happenings and agreements that surfaced on Monday leaguewide:
— Former Cowboys running back Tony Pollard has agreed to a three-year, $24 million deal with the Tennessee Titans. Tennessee also added defensive back Chidobe Awuzie.
— Cowboys center Tyler Biadasz and defensive lineman Dorance Armstrong are joining former defensive coordinator Dan Quinn and the Washington Commanders.
— Former Philadelphia Eagles running back D’Andre Swift is expected to sign a three-year, $24 million deal with the Chicago Bears. In response, the Eagles are signing former New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley. Philadelphia is also signing defensive end Bryce Huff.
— After being released by the Denver Broncos, quarterback Russell Wilson is signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
— Quarterback Kirk Cousins is expected to sign a four-year, $180 million deal with the Atlanta Falcons.
— Offensive lineman Jonah Jackson is leaving the Detroit Lions to sign a four-year, $51 million contract with the Los Angeles Rams. LA also expects to add former Seahawks tight end Colby Parkinson.
— The Green Bay Packers released running back Aaron Jones on Monday and are expected to sign running back Josh Jacobs to a four-year, $48 million deal. Green Bay is also adding safety Xavier McKinney.
— The Las Vegas Raiders have an agreement with defensive tackle Christian Wilkins on a four-year deal worth $110 million.
— The Jacksonville Jaguars are expected to sign wide receiver Gabe Davis, safety Darnell Savage, and center Mitch Morse. The Jaguars also had an agreement with kicker Will Lutz, who has since opted to return to the Denver Broncos.
— Former Miami Dolphins linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel and former Houston Texans linebacker Blake Cashman are signing with the Minnesota Vikings.
— The New York Giants are expected to add guard Jon Runyan Jr. and running back Devin Singletary.
— Guard Robert Hunt plans to join the Carolina Panthers.
— Defensive tackle Bilal Nichols is signing with the Arizona Cardinals.
— The Los Angeles Chargers have an agreement with running back Gus Edwards on a two-year deal and will also be adding tight end Will Dissly.
— The Houston Texans plan to sign defensive back Jeff Okudah and defensive end Denico Autry.
— The New England Patriots have released wide receiver DeVante Parker and plan to sign running back Antonio Gibson from the Commanders.
