The Dallas Mavericks have announced that guard Dante Exum suffered a wrist injury during training camp and could require surgery to repair the damage.
The Mavericks and Exum have already begun evaluating the different treatment options that the 29-year-old can undergo for the “serious” injury. Still, the expectation is that he will be forced to miss a significant amount of time while he recovers, as reported by The Athletic’s Shams Charania.
Exum is coming off one of the most productive seasons of his NBA career, where he averaged 19.8 minutes per game and collected 7.8 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 2.9 assists.
Exum’s biggest improvement last season came from his shooting ability, as he shot a career-high of 49.1% from behind the three-point line and 53.3% from the field.
Losing Exum for the foreseeable future would be a brutal injury for the Mavericks, who are looking to remain consistent and maintain their momentum.
Exum’s improvements helped solidify him as an integral part of the Mavericks’ rotation during their run to the NBA Finals, where they eventually lost to the Boston Celtics in five games.
Dallas will now be forced to rely even more heavily on the new additions to the team during the early portions of the season that Exum will miss.
The Mavericks signed forwards Klay Thompson, Naji Marshall, and guard Spencer Dinwiddie. The franchise also completed a trade with the Detroit Pistons, bringing in guard Quentin Grimes in exchange for Tim Hardaway Jr.
