Dallas Mavericks power forward Anthony Davis could reportedly miss the beginning of the season as he recovers from eye surgery in the offseason.
Davis underwent eye surgery during the offseason to repair a detached retina that he suffered during the 2024-25 regular season, with the expectation that he would be fully healthy by the beginning of the Mavericks’ training camp.
However, Davis’ availability to start the season has now come into question.
NBA Insider Marc Stein detailed the recovery process and said there is a chance that Davis will not be able to begin the season, noting that he has not begun working on the court yet.
“But also, it’ll be our chance to see AD, who we know had this eye procedure. And, based on everything I’m told, he’s not fully back on the court yet. He can’t be fully back on the court yet. So, it’s like, when practices start on September 30, will AD even be ready to practice at that point? We don’t know that yet,” he said during an appearance on the DLLS Mavs podcast.
As previously reported by The Dallas Express, the Mavericks will host training camp from September 30 until October 4 at Simon Fraser University, with the team then preparing for its first preseason matchup on Monday, October 6.
This timeline raises questions about Davis’ ability to be on the court, as the team would likely prefer that he spend significant time practicing with them before the start of the regular season.
Davis potentially missing time to open the season would be a major blow for a Mavericks team that is already dealing with an injury to Kyrie Irving, who is expected to miss over half of the regular season as he recovers from a torn ACL.
With Davis now expected to miss the beginning of the year, the Mavericks could have to rely heavily on rookie forward Cooper Flagg, who was selected first overall by the team in the 2025 NBA Draft.
Although Dallas has some time before the regular season begins on October 22, the team will likely have to find the most effective ways to win games early in the season without its two most important players.
