After dropping last week in favor of the University of Alabama, the undefeated Texas Longhorns have once again reclaimed the top overall spot in The Associated Press College Football Top 25 rankings for Week 7.
Texas received nearly every vote for the top overall spot in the rankings, as 52 of the 61 total voters voted for them as the best team in college football, with Ohio State University receiving the remaining nine votes.
The Longhorns had a Week 6 bye and did not move up in the rankings due to a win, but Alabama’s loss to Vanderbilt allowed Texas to jump back into the driver’s seat.
Texas has been dominant in each of its five games to begin the season. The Longhorns have won their games by an average of 38 points while allowing opponents to score an average of seven points per game.
These performances have resulted in the Longhorns leading their opponents for 87.2% of the action during games and never trailing at any point during the season, according to KXAN.
One of the most impressive aspects of the Longhorns’ ranking is that the team has missed starting quarterback Quinn Ewers for multiple games to begin the year and has instead relied on Arch Manning to lead the team.
Manning played well during two games, starting at quarterback and finishing with 583 combined passing yards and five total touchdowns; however, Ewers’ return will allow the Longhorns to take on the more talented teams in the Southeastern Conference (SEC).
The most impressive win of the Longhorns’ season came in Week 3 against the University of Michigan. Texas traveled to Ann Arbor and won 31-12 over the Wolverines.
Texas has already put together multiple convincing wins over good teams, but its schedule will continue to get tougher as it enters conference play during its first season as an SEC member.
The Longhorns’ next matchup will occur on Saturday in Dallas against the University of Oklahoma in the 120th Red River Rivalry game. Texas leads with an all-time record of 63-51-5, per My San Antonio.
Although the Longhorns have the better record over the entire lifetime of these games, the Sooners have a record of 17-8 since 2000 and defeated Texas 34-30 in their most recent battle.
Following their matchup against the Sooners, the Longhorns will return to Austin for a home game against the fifth-ranked University of Georgia on October 19.
