Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones does not see another NFL team in the city’s near future, despite what Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson envisions.

“Well, I like the mayor,” said Jones to The Dallas Morning News. “I like him personally, but he doesn’t have the depth. He doesn’t have the knowledge that others have regarding how unique Dallas is and how we enjoy the interest in the Cowboys. He wouldn’t want to water that down as it relates to Dallas if he knew as much and has spent as much time in sports as I have.”

According to Forbes, the Cowboys are the most valuable team in the NFL, valued at $6.5 billion and generating $800 million in revenue in 2021. Additionally, the team has a $280 million operating profit.

The Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex’s expansion and people’s passion for football, according to Mayor Johnson, make the area a top choice for a second team.

Johnson voiced his belief that Dallas could support an American Football Conference (AFC) franchise to complement the Dallas Cowboys, citing that Los Angeles and New York, neither of which are major football towns, both have two teams.

Mayor Johnson responded to the NFL on CBS’s Twitter question about which city deserved a new expansion team, indicating his desire to add another to Dallas.

After catching word of Jones’ unenthusiastic response to another NFL team in the city, Johnson gave his thoughts to the DMN.

“I like Jerry Jones a lot, and he has done a great job turning my beloved Cowboys into the most valuable sports franchise on the planet,” he said. “No team will ever dethrone the Cowboys — but that’s not the point. This region loves football and could certainly support a second team.”

Johnson pointed out that his job is to boost the city’s economy.
