The Philadelphia Eagles and quarterback Jalen Hurts have agreed to a five-year, $255 million contract extension.

Reports of the extension surfaced Monday night and were later confirmed by Yahoo Sports.

Hurts will receive $126.5 million by next March, becomes the highest-paid player in NFL history, and can make up to $274.304 million with incentives by the end of his contract.

The deal comes as Hurts was set to enter the final year of his four-year rookie contract and ensures that he will remain in Philadelphia through 2028.

“We always knew Jalen was talented, had a very live arm that we thought was discounted in college because he was such a great runner, and his character was always considered great,” Eagles chairman and CEO Jeffrey Lurie told reporters at the league’s annual offseason meeting earlier this year.

“I think the future is so great for him,” Lurie continued. “…Each franchise quarterback is different. But I’ve always said to you guys, quarterback, GM, coach, facilities, stadium, scouting, those kind of things, those are the keys. Once you can find it, that’s when you’re really excited. We’ll be working with Jalen I’m sure for a long time.”

Hurts will get $179.3 million guaranteed, the second-most in the league behind Cleveland’s Deshaun Watson. The deal also includes $110 million guaranteed at signing and the Eagles’ first-ever no-trade clause — allowing Hurts to veto any potential trades to teams for which he does not wish to play.

Hurts has spent his entire three-year career with the Eagles after being selected in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft. He took over the starting job in 2021 and helped lead the team to the playoffs with a second-half surge in his first year as the starter.

He holds a 20-5 record in the regular season since the middle of the 2021-22 season.

Hurts returned as the starting quarterback in 2022, becoming one of the most exciting players in the league and leading the Eagles to a 14-3 record and the Super Bowl while throwing for 3,701 yards, running for another 760, accounting for 35 touchdowns, and finishing as the runner-up for league MVP.
